Can the Zigbee signal penetrate concrete factory walls or metal control cabinets?
2.4GHz signal will penetrate normal indoor environments but dense industrial materials such as reinforced concrete or heavy steel machinery will greatly attenuate the signal. Devices mounted inside sealed metal control cabinets (Faraday cages) shall not use internal antennas. Our converters feature an external SMA antenna connector. You can use a magnetic extension cable to mount the antenna on the outside of the cabinet for a clear line of sight and a strong mesh connection.
My legacy SCADA software only reads data from local COM ports (COM1/COM2). How can it receive wireless Zigbee data over an Ethernet LAN?
We have solved this compatibility problem with our included Vircom Virtual Serial software. The Vircom tool creates a virtual COM port on your PC that connects directly to the VT-ZIGBEE701 gateway via your Ethernet network. Your legacy software just opens this virtual COM port as if the serial devices are hardwired directly to the computer’s motherboard, no changes to your existing software code is needed.
Does this industrial Zigbee gateway require an internet connection or a cloud subscription to function?
A: No, it doesn’t require internet access at all. The Valtoris Zigbee network is a Local Area Network (LAN) technology. It is a stand alone, air-gapped wireless mesh network that works directly with the local Zigbee Converter for on-premise data logging and automation. Your mission critical OT data remains behind the firewall of your facility.
Can this device translate between Modbus RTU sensors and a Modbus TCP SCADA system?
A: Yes. While the VT-ZIGBEE700 acts as a transparent wireless serial link, the [👉 VT-ZIGBEE701 Industrial Zigbee Gateway ] features a built-in Transfer Protocol engine. Through the configuration software, you can set the protocol to “Modbus TCP<->RTU”. Your Ethernet network Modbus TCP requests will then be translated to standard Modbus RTU frames for your wireless serial nodes, and the responses will be seamlessly translated back.
