Based on TIA/EIA-485 guidelines. Base Max Distance ≈
100,000,000 / Baud Rate.Multiplier: 24AWG = 1.0x, 22AWG Shielded = 1.5x, Unshielded Phone Cable = 0.7x.
2. Without Termination (Reflection Limit):
Not limited by attenuation, but by signal reflection (Transmission Line Theory). To prevent reflections from corrupting data, the propagation delay must be less than 10% of the bit time.
Approximated Limit ≈
300,000 / Baud Rate (meters). Beyond this threshold, the system fails regardless of wire quality. Margin is considered N/A.Read RS485 TIA/EIA-485 Theory Guide +
Understanding RS485 Distance Limits & Baud Rate
In industrial automation RS485 max distance is inversely proportional to baud rate. According to TIA/EIA-485, a typical copper network can transmit data over as much as 1,200 meters (4,000 feet) at a maximum speed of 100 kbps. But at higher speeds, such as 115,200 bps, the cable length allowed falls off sharply due to signal attenuation and capacitance.
Why 120-Ohm Termination Resistors Matter
One of the biggest mistakes in RS485 daisy-chain wiring is not putting 120-ohm termination resistors at both ends of the bus. If the wire is not impedance matched, electrical signals will bounce back from the end of the wire, causing reflections that corrupt data frames. Our analyzer determines this threshold by applying transmission line theory: If your cable propagation delay is greater than 10% of the bit time, termination is required to prevent Modbus communication failures.
Overcoming Copper Constraints
When your factory layout exceeds the theoretical copper limit, or when dealing with severe electromagnetic interference (EMI) and ground loops, software tweaks won’t fix the physics. In these cases the only reliable structural solutions are to use RS485 repeaters to regenerate voltage, Serial to Ethernet Gateways to route data over LAN/WAN or upgrade to Fiber Optic Converters for total galvanic isolation.
