The Infrared (IR) Current Spike

During the day, a PTZ camera might draw only 15W. However, when infrared LEDs activate at night, power draw can spike by 50% to 100%. According to Ohm’s Law ($V_{drop} = I \times R$), higher current ($I$) drastically increases the voltage drop along the cable. If the voltage reaching the camera falls below the IEEE 802.3at minimum threshold (42.5V), the camera will suffer a brownout and reboot endlessly.
